The #1 Corporate Chair Massage Company  in NYC Uses laughter Yoga

I was at a wellness fair put on by the HR department of a large corporation.  The New York City Chair Massage Company – www.eventschairmassage.com was part of the event and they were using regular yoga as well as laughter yoga in their chair massage sessions.

Laughter yoga (Hasyayoga) is a practice involving prolonged voluntary laughter. Laughter yoga is based on the belief that voluntary laughter provides the same physiological and psychological benefits as spontaneous laughter. Laughter yoga is done in groups, with eye contact and playfulness between participants. Forced laughter soon turns into real and contagious laughter.

Laughter yoga was made popular as an exercise routine developed by Indian physician Madan Kataria and his wife, who writes about the practice in his 2002 book Laugh For No Reason.

In time it is likely to be as popular as running or jogging.

run-1772116__340.jpg

In the mid-1990s, laughter yoga was practiced in the early mornings in open parks, primarily by groups of older people. Later, a more formal version was created and popularized as “Laughter Clubs”. Kataria’s first Laughter Yoga Club began on 13 March 1995 in Mumbai, with five people in a local public park. The concept rapidly spread worldwide, and as of 2011, there were more than 8,000 Laughter Clubs in 100 countries. Each group is run by a “Laugh Captain” and operates independently.

Laughter is easily stimulated in a group when combined with eye contact, ‘childlike playfulness’ and laughter exercises. Fake laughter quickly becomes real. Laughter Yoga brings more oxygen to the body and brain by incorporating yogic breathing which results in deep diaphragmatic breathing.

Anyone can laugh without needing to rely on humor, jokes or comedy. Laughter is initially simulated as a physical exercise while maintaining eye contact with others in the group and promoting childlike playfulness. In most cases this soon leads to real and contagious laughter. Laughter yoga is the only technique that allows adults to achieve sustained hearty laughter without involving cognitive thought It bypasses the intellectual systems that normally act as a brake on natural laughter.

Laughter yoga sessions start with gentle warm-up techniques which include stretching, chanting, clapping and body movement. These help break down inhibitions and develop feelings of ‘childlike playfulness’. Breathing exercises are used to prepare the lungs for laughter, followed by a series of ‘laughter exercises’ that combine the method of acting and visualization techniques with playfulness. These exercises, when combined with the strong social dynamics of group behavior, lead to prolonged and hearty unconditional laughter. Laughter exercises are interspersed with breathing exercises. Twenty minutes of laughter is sufficient to develop full physiological benefits. With chair massage and acupressure added the benefits expand to a much greater level

A laughter yoga session may finish with “Laughter Meditation”. This is a session of unstructured laughter whereby participants sit or lie down and allow natural laughter to flow from within “like a fountain”.

The Artist’s Way and Joseph Campbell’s Concept  – “Live Your Bliss”

I have a friend who is a very passionate Jazz musician. She lives in New Orleans and e-mails me interesting articles.

She sent me one today I’m going to share with you. It is about being kind, bringing out the best in others and living your passion.

Joseph Campbell always talked about living “your bliss”.

He derived this idea from the Upanishads , a sacred Hindu text. Here the word Ananda is often mentioned. “Ananda” means bliss or rapture.  Campbell saw this not merely as a mantra, but as a helpful guide to the individual along the journey that each of us walks through life:

“If you follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living. Wherever you are—if you are following your bliss, you are enjoying that refreshment, that life within you, all the time.”

Campbell began sharing this idea with students during his lectures in the 1970s. By the time that The Power of Myth was aired on PBS in 1988, six months following Campbell’s death, “Follow your bliss” was a philosophy that resonated deeply with the American public—both religious and secular.

While I was speaking at a stress management event I sat down in a corporate onsite chair massage book in the exhibitor area. Run by www.eventschairmassage.com I took the break time to read the article Estelle had sent me. It was about a

simple fellow named  Sunny who died a few months back at 81 years of age. He had seen the world lived in India, came home to Brooklyn and took over his families old bar. He was an artist and clearly “Lived His Bliss!”

He was a pure artist and brought joy to people who were sad. When he passed on it created a ripple so great that it became a story in the New York Times.

Enjoy, Live your Bliss, be kind and help sad people to be happy.

Somatics, Massage and Holism

I recently gave a speech at a conference on stress management on the importance of merging massage and somatics as the ultimate expression of “. “Holism”. Holism is an approach to systemic thinking that states that the elements within a system influence each other in ways that cannot be explained or determined by understanding, measuring, or defining any individual unit within that system.

CHAIR MASSAGE Contract.jpg

The word Holism comes from the ancient Greek word (ὅλος holos,
meaning total, all, or entire). The concept of holistic thinking has
ancient roots going back to Aristotle and was expanded upon by Jan Smuts and R. Buckminster Fuller. Jan Smuts named the concept Holism. He states that holism is “The tendency in nature to form wholes that are greater than the sum of the parts through creative evolution.” What a visionary idea!

All this explained in an Introduction to the Teaching of the RealUGuru.

BOOKM_C_copy-150x150.jpg

Find it at http://www.RealUGuru.com

The term Holistic did not come into common usage until the 1960’s. Since then, the words holism and holistic have become clichés of sorts for every “new age” idea to come along and this has lead to some resistance among scientists exploring a scientific interpretation of holism.  However, respected visionaries like Buckminster Fuller understood the concept and wrote extensively on it, even naming the process of the sum being greater than the parts “Synergy.”
Today the term holism and holistic thinking in the academic world and in the world of professional massage is widespread. It is commonly used in the social sciences but is still considered a radical concept in the mainstream scientific community. Much of what is now known as “systems thinking” can be traced to holism and is core to the integration of traditional western massage, bodywork and “energetic” based hands-on-healing systems such as Swedish Massage, Shiatsu, reflexology, Polarity Therapy, Reiki, Rolfing, Aromatherapy Massage, Connective Tissue Massage, Rolfing, Cranial Sacral Techniques and many other approaches that integrate body, mind and spirit.
Holism has greater popularity in the social sciences than in the natural sciences. This has become more the case since scientists are encountering problems of ever-greater complexity, that though unsolvable by the traditional approach of deducing information from the properties of the basic parts of systems alone, can be explained by exploring the influence of certain units in a system upon other units in that same system. The massage professional has experienced the same trend in the last few decades with “chi” based touch producing positive results where tapping, kneading, cupping and other related techniques may fall short when used in isolation.
Holistic Theory has applications in fields as diverse as architecture, biology, economics, industrial design, linguistics, philosophy and sociology as it does in the integration of seemingly oppositional massage and bodywork techniques. There are many ways that a massage therapist can apply holistic models to touch based therapies. Many physicians recognize this and are willing to bring massage, somatic and body psychotherapy  into Holistic medicine and Holistic healing practices. For  a massage therapist intuition can play an important role and this is where scientific holism can be invaluable. Scientific Holism holds that the behavior of a system cannot be perfectly predicted, no matter how much data is available.

In this book you will learn new ways to expand your massage practice and if you are a dancer, gymnast, personal trainer, or martial artist you will learn how to integrate massage into your training program.

Empathy, Influence and Healing

Empathy, Influence and Healing

I learned that one of the challenges for the person of power and influence is to have a deep appreciation of empathy – the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

I say this is a challenge is that one cannot be empathetic for everyone as much as we might wish to.  To attempt to do so is contrary to the possibilities of human psychology.

Chair Massage NYC for meetings and events

In the new environment of globalization the influencer and power broker is more than ever confronted with the collateral damage that may result from certain decisions.  Now, it seems that the world is more empathetic than ever. To feel the pain of suffering in other peoples or in geographically distant places are ways of thinking that were not part of our cultural behaviors just a century ago. Advances in communication, transportation and the culture of social networking has changed the way we see each other. Even Violence, seen on historical timescales, is decreasing and where it has not decreased there is often condemnation and consequences for those who violate what is considered ethical behavior towards others

As we expand the scope of our empathy the circle of those we care about has expanded to include people of different races, creeds, social and economic classes and nations. It seems that not only the human race will draw our empathy but animals and the planet itself. Most would say that this pattern is a good thing and yet there is a challenge here.

Of course there is flawed thinking in the creating of this perfect picture. Our instinctive nature tells us to separate others into to “us” and “them”. On the Wisdom Path this is called Tribal Thinking” and is difficult to transcend. We like to help those in our tribe. These may be friends, family, or fellow citizens. At the other extreme we may neglect or even punish those we do not consider as members of our tribe. In our post-modern, globalized,  multicutural world our moral circles are expanding still many remain stubbornly fixed to dogmatic definitions of tribes and even sub-tribes within major goups – Protestant and Catholic, Pentocostal and both  Democrats and Republicans, Tea Party Republicans and mainstream Republicans,  Sunnis and Shiites, both within these groups opposed to Sufis Duke, Observant Jews and Reform Jews etc

The person who is motivated by love and compassion is likely to have an intellectual and emotional investment in universal empathy, which means no boundary between in-group and out-group. This is a challenge for in doing so there will likely be a conflict between our hierarchal and competitive nature and our desire to be altruistic in all ways.

As the realization spreads that life on earth need not always be a zero sum game we have the capability to act on the empathy we feel and be kinder, gentler and compassionate. Even the most selfish and provincial among us has the ability to put an empathetically driven reciprocal altruism into action with little cost to ourselves if reciprocation does not take place.  With a clear intention we can become more inclusive, reducing  the need to divide between in-group and out-group. There are number of ways to increase empathy. They include:

Practicing meditation, serving others and simply having the intention to be more empathetic towards ideologically and racially dissimilar others.

The great thing about the natural tendency most people have to be competitive and hierarchal is that can often be easily influenced to respond to some financial or material gain. I often write about this in my analysis of game theory and applied game based thinking. Whenever one introduces monetary incentives people can be motivated to behave better towards their adversaries and have greater empathy towards them. Of course we are tribal on a core level and it is unlikely that we will ever completely transcend our parochial tendencies patterns.

How empathetic are you and how do you express empathy for others in your daily life?

Winning the Game of Life: A Primer to Lewis Harrison’s Applied Game Theory

Winning The Game Of Life: A Primer On Lewis Harrison’s Applied Game Theory

How Can You Spot A Liar – Patient Non-Compliance?

My friend the hypnotists believes he can tell if someone is lying.

I don’t think he can.

It is commonly believed that the most effective way to determine if a person is lying or not is to focus on body language or eye movements, Unfortunately unless you are a professional mentalist with a mastery of this skill this will not work.  Numerous studies have shown that that attempts to read lies from body language and facial expressions usually fail. This is the case even with trained police officers. According to one study, just 50 out of 20,000 people managed to make a correct judgment with more than 80% accuracy. One could be as accurate just flipping a coin.

Lies 2.jpg

In the past the accepted wisdom was that the act of lying provoked some strong emotions that would be that are difficult to contain including a sense of guilt, nerves, perhaps even excitement at the challenge. So, even if one  thinks one has a poker face, one might still give away some tiny movements  known as “micro-expressions”, it was believed were likely to give the game away.

One could read a liar’s intentions via their body language or from their face – blushing cheeks, a nervous laugh, darting eyes.

The difficulty in doing this is that every group of people has a unique set of behaviors that is seldom shared by other groups. There is no universal dictionary of body language

I was speaking at a convention recently. A meeting planner had contacted my company www.nostressspeaker.com to have me speak  at a convention on stress in the healing professions. Of course we included corporate on-site chair massage in the program through out partnership with www.eventschairmassage.com.

One of the performers at the vent was a stage Mentalist. I asked her how she did what she did and she gave me a short course on her technique.

Though a skilled mentalist may recognize patterns unique to a certain group and read them correctly it is unlikely that a psychologist or any ordinary person with an interest in the subject could find reliable cues through quick observation. With familiarity, one might be able to spot someone’s tics whenever they are lying or telling the truth, but most others will probably act very. There is no consistent pattern of signs that always appear with deception. One person may seem to sneer while another giggles nervously, avoids it, some make eye contact, while others become more serious.

Lies 1.jpg

Even the idea that you can intuitively, subconscious isolate these signs has been disproved consistently.

Amazingly, our safety often rests on the belief that these mythical cues exist. This can be frightening when you really think about it. Consider the screening of passengers before a long-haul flight.

The process usually involves officers using a “yes/no” questionnaire about the flyer’s intentions, The officers are generally trained to observe “suspicious signs” (such as nervous body language) that might betray deception.  The challenge for accuracy here in reading whether a person is or is not lying is that making a decision on this requires not just observation of non-verbal cues but also to listen to what a person says and how they say it. One has to process whether what a person says is credible and must also observe behavior change. These are the core elements for detecting deception. The existing protocols of watching body language  are prone to bias, especially concerning ethnicity. Even a progressive thinking person who is sure that they are not racists or bigoted  are more likely to find suspicious signs in certain ethnic groups. Some experts believe that the current approaches to deception detection may actually be obstacles to effective reading of cues method actually prevents deception detection,” he says.

The solution is simple. If a reader’s intuition gives them the sense that deception is taking place change the focus from the subtle non-verbal mannerisms to the actual words and phrases individuals saying. With gentle probing in the right places the liar’s front will soon crumble.

Creating a Life Mission Through Compassion

I have a personal interest in ways that we can live more loving, compassionate and empathetic lives.

Every once and a while a come across an article or blog that addresses this very concept.

Today I came across one called

“’Today We Are His Family’: Teen Volunteers Mourn Those Who Died Alone”

As the title implies a group of Boston teenagers are making a difference in their own way. They seek out those who died alone with no family to comfort them in their last days. They attend the funeral of the deceased “anonymous” person and act as pallbearers at the funeral. They create community for those who seem to have none or to have lost whatever community they had. It made me think about the purpose of living and the cyc;e of life.

COL.jpg

Many of the comments after the article were poignant, and often critical of the motivation, purpose, intention or benefit of this activity.

Here is the link to the full article.

http://www.npr.org/2016/01/25/463567685/today-we-are-his-family-teen-volunteers-mourn-those-who-died-alone?utm_source=npr_newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_content=20160131&utm_campaign=bestofnpr&utm_term=nprnews is posted at

He are a few comments posted on about the article.

“All acts of kindness and volunteerism should be appreciated, no doubt. But I wonder about this in perspective relative to other potential actions by these well-intentioned young men. Clearly, the deceased can’t appreciate their good will. To wit: he’s dead. Even in life, many who live alone chose to do so; sympathy for their isolation is mis-guided. And what if he was atheist — who benefits from a prayer in his honor? With the fact that there simply aren’t enough volunteers, wouldn’t these guys’ time be better served visiting an elderly shut-in who is alive and does crave the opportunity for a conversation? Or how about visiting a shelter and playing fetch with a dog who will be euthanized tomorrow due to no fault of its own? Volunteering to somehow improve another’s quality of life has real value IMO. This somehow seems like nothing more than free labor.”

“Just say ‘thank you’. This deed obviously meant a great deal to these young men, and a critique of their good intentions is not necessary. Just say “thank you”.

“Tell me this — other than making them feel good (which, be definition, would be selfish), what good did it do? What did it accomplish that resulted in benefit to others?”

“Actions such as these send a message to the living, that each life if worth something.”

“We should take every chance that we can to reaffirm that we are decent human beings. Many times the persons or animals we are performing a last act of kindness for are beyond caring or can not care, but the act selfishly helps us to maintain a feeling that we are decent members of humanity.”

Pierre Marie Félix Janet and the History of Hypnosis

I was mentoring a member of the association today and we got into a discussion about how one transforms themselves; really changes their way of thinking.

 Trance 1.jpg

In my mind this cannot be done intellectually. One must explore the emotional core of one’s being. Clean out the “cellular memory” – the stud that get’s stored in our physical body on the deepest level. This can be some a number of ways.

You can call them trance processes, visualization, hypnosis, shamanic realities or altered states of conscious. Even corporate chair massage can put you in this state. Often when I do motivational speaking about hypnosis, stress management and personal development I speak about trance states.

Two of my favorites approaches to transformation are Inner Child Work as presented by John Bradshaw and Journal writing as created by Ira Progroff (an early friend of Joseph Campbell’s .) Both of these are included in my book “100 Portals: Wormholes to Alternate Reality” – When completed this book will be Volume 8 in the Teachings of Lewis Harrison.

Much of this transformational work is done through an external or self created hypnotic trance. Much of my work as a mentor revolves around trance work and the exploration of altered states of conscious.

Since Monday is the day I write about visionary thinkers I want to introduce you to a great pioneer in Trance work: Pierre Marie Félix Janet

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Pierre Marie Félix Janet: (30 May 1859 – 24 February 1947) was a pioneering French psychologist, philosopher and psychotherapist in the field of dissociation and traumatic memory.

Janet was one of the first people to allege a connection between events in the subject’s past life and his or her present day trauma, and coined the words ‘dissociation and ‘subconscious’. His study of the ‘magnetic passion’ or ‘rapport’ between the patient and the hypnotist anticipated later accounts of transference.

He was an influence on William James, Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung and Alfred Adler all pioneers in Psychiatry and Psychology and Jung studied with Janet in directly in 1902.

He is ranked alongside William James and Wilhelm Wundt as one of the founding fathers of psychology.

The Wisdom Path for Reiki Masters

With a deep your understanding  of  Zen, Taoism or some other spiritually based studies you can be a better healer.

No matter how advanced  your intellect, and mental clarity, the fact remains that in your practice you will need to explore how the appropriate application of your individual talents, personal resources, and your ability to delay short term gratification can help you create your best life.

Both Zen and Taoism are essentially “Wisdom Paths”. They are approaches to spirituality that explore what “Is” through metaphor and poetic thoughts, while guiding you to surrender the need to understand your thoughts concerning what “is”. Each of these paths, Taoism and Zen, has subtle differences that ultimately will dissolve once you have mastered either. It better to drop the distinctions from the very beginning if possible. Let’s just call one’s intention to live life fully, with little or no unnecessary struggle the, “Wisdom Path.”

The Wisdom Path integrates practices and traditions from Zen and Taoism and also draws from a diverse pool of thought including Kabala, Sufism, Game Theory, and mystic Christianity.  Whether the source is Lao Tsu Meister Eckhart, Thomas Merton or the Ball Shem Tov the core element in this work is the sitting meditation often associate with the Soto School of Zen. Also Integrated into the Wisdom Path is the exploration of kōans as practiced in the Rinzai Zen School, and the altered states of consciousness that may naturally arise with deep introspection and contemplation.  The aim of all of these is essentially the same – enlightenment or awakening.  In addition to mediation and the exploration of kōans learning to conserve our resources and balance them as they manifest  through our life skills is equally important.  By merging these approaches, you are in a sense creating a post-modern monastery.

We were recently offering a seminar on stress management at the Catskills Bed and Breakfast  – http://www.TheCatskillsbedandBreakfast.com – in Stamford NY. During the breakout sessions we offered stress management seminars that including creative visualization, spirituality in business and onsite chair massage. The event was a great success.
