Strategies and Techniques For Handling Resistant or Reluctant Clients

I have learned that no matter how good a healer or chair massage therapist you may be some clients won’t follow direction.  Our company – The New York Chair Massage Company – http://www.eventschairmassage.com has dealt with this issue for years. Among the key Strategies and Techniques for handling resistant or reluctant clients is through mastering the art of influence. Influence is a general term used to describe any event or process where one entity (be it a person, corporation, government, religion, media organization, etc) can change either directly or indirectly another entity’s thoughts, feelings, or behaviors. Where there is power, change is precipitated. With human beings, this change will generally take place concerning a belief, an attitude, the possession of physical wealth, and/or the use of influence in its various forms.

Many theories, techniques, and tips can be used to create influence. Most of these affect us through our ways of thinking and emotions. In fact, there is a deep link between how we think and how we feel. Mark Salem, a noted entertainer, and mentalist, stated in a 60 Minutes interview with Mike Wallace, “For every thought, there is a physical reaction.” Salem and many other noted mentalists have the uncanny ability to sense what a person will say or do, and at times even influence what they will say or do by reading hundreds of small signs, known as “cues.” In a stage show, Salem and his peers can perform what I like to call “slight of mind tricks,” it is as if they can read the future or know what a person is thinking. What we are actually doing is watching a Master of Influence at work. Like the Don Juan pick up artist who can capture the heart of a woman by saying or doing a certain thing in a certain way, or a powerful Evangelist, like Billy Graham, who can get a church group jumping with a brilliant sermon, these stage entertainers have an understanding of why influence plays an important role for all of us in society, no matter who we are.

An Advanced Exploration of Craniosacral Therapy and Chair Massage

I have been doing craniosacral therapy as part of my Corporate On-site chair massage practice – www.eventschairmassage.com  for decades.

RUG Logo.png

Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a form of bodywork or alternative therapy using gentle touch to manipulate the synarthrodial joints of the cranium. A practitioner of cranial-sacral therapy may also apply light touches to a patient’s spine and pelvis. Practitioners believe that this manipulation regulates the flow of cerebrospinal fluid and aids in “primary respiration”. Craniosacral therapy was developed by John Upledger, D.O. in the 1970s, as an offshoot of osteopathy in the cranial field, or cranial osteopathy, which was developed in the 1930s by William Garner Sutherland.

Many massage therapists have studied these chair massage techniques but do not really understand the mechanisms involved. It is like a puzzle with many pieces.

Let’s begin with the fluctuation of the cerebrospinal fluid.

There is research which demonstrates examiners are unable to measure craniosacral motion reliably, as indicated by a lack of inter-rater agreement among examiners. The authors of this research conclude this “measurement error may be sufficiently large to render many clinical decisions potentially erroneous”. Alternative medicine practitioners have interpreted this result as a product of entrainment between patient and practitioner, a principle which lacks scientific support. Whether craniosacral motion can be reliably palpated remains a subject of debate with studies producing mixed results.

The Primary Respiratory Mechanism (PRM), the mechanism originally proposed by Sutherland, has been summarized in five ideas:

  1. Inherent motility of the central nervous system
  2. Fluctuation of the cerebrospinal fluid
  3. Mobility of the intracranial and intraspinal dural membranes
  4. Mobility of the cranial bones
  5. Involuntary motion of thesacrum between the ilia

Inherent motility of the central nervous system[edit]

The postulated intracranial fluid fluctuation is described by practitioners as an interaction between four main components: arterial bloodcapillary blood (brain volume), venous blood and cerebrospinal fluid(CSF).

Mobility of the cranial bones

The extent to which cranial bones are able to move is considered controversial and studies of the existence and degree of cranial motion have yielded mixed findings.[14] Cranial sutures are the areas in which the eight cranial bones are joined. During infancy, the cranial bones are not rigidly fused to each other,[22] but are instead bound together by a membrane known as a fontanelle where two sutures join. Between the first and second year of life, the cranial bones begin to move together and fuse as a normal part of development. Studies examining the age of the closure of the cranial sutures have reported mixed findings. Closure has been reported to occur during adolescence while other studies indicate greater individual variability in the timing of this closure with fusion of the lambdoid suturesagittal suture, and coronal sutures taking place in the fourth decade of life, but complete fusion of all sutures not occurring until advanced age (the eighth decade of life has been reported); some studies have found that the sutures never rigidly fuse.According to Gray’s Anatomy, “[w]hen such sutures are tied by sutural ligament and periosteum, almost complete immobility results”.

Mobility of the intracranial and intraspinal dural membranes

In 1970, Upledger observed during a surgical procedure on the neck what he described as a slow pulsating movement within the spinal meninges. He attempted to hold the membrane still and found that he could not due to the strength of the action behind the movement

Treatment

The therapist lightly palpates the patient’s body, and focuses intently on the communicated movements. A practitioner’s feeling of being in tune with a patient is described as entrainment. Patients often report feelings of deep relaxation during and after the treatment session, and may feel light-headed. While sometimes thought to be caused by an increase in endorphins, research shows the effects may actually be brought about by the endocannabinoid system.

There are few reports of adverse events from CST treatment. In one study of craniosacral manipulation in patients with traumatic brain syndrome, the incidence of adverse effects from treatment was 5%.

The #1 Corporate Chair Massage Company  in NYC Uses laughter Yoga

I was at a wellness fair put on by the HR department of a large corporation.  The New York City Chair Massage Company – www.eventschairmassage.com was part of the event and they were using regular yoga as well as laughter yoga in their chair massage sessions.

yoga-2232811__340.jpg

Laughter yoga (Hasyayoga) is a practice involving prolonged voluntary laughter. Laughter yoga is based on the belief that voluntary laughter provides the same physiological and psychological benefits as spontaneous laughter. Laughter yoga is done in groups, with eye contact and playfulness between participants. Forced laughter soon turns into real and contagious laughter.

Laughter yoga was made popular as an exercise routine developed by Indian physician Madan Kataria and his wife, who writes about the practice in his 2002 book Laugh For No Reason.

In time it is likely to be as popular as running or jogging.

run-1772116__340.jpg

In the mid-1990s, laughter yoga was practiced in the early mornings in open parks, primarily by groups of older people. Later, a more formal version was created and popularized as “Laughter Clubs”. Kataria’s first Laughter Yoga Club began on 13 March 1995 in Mumbai, with five people in a local public park. The concept rapidly spread worldwide, and as of 2011, there were more than 8,000 Laughter Clubs in 100 countries. Each group is run by a “Laugh Captain” and operates independently.

Laughter is easily stimulated in a group when combined with eye contact, ‘childlike playfulness’ and laughter exercises. Fake laughter quickly becomes real. Laughter Yoga brings more oxygen to the body and brain by incorporating yogic breathing which results in deep diaphragmatic breathing.

Anyone can laugh without needing to rely on humor, jokes or comedy. Laughter is initially simulated as a physical exercise while maintaining eye contact with others in the group and promoting childlike playfulness. In most cases this soon leads to real and contagious laughter. Laughter yoga is the only technique that allows adults to achieve sustained hearty laughter without involving cognitive thought It bypasses the intellectual systems that normally act as a brake on natural laughter.

Laughter yoga sessions start with gentle warm-up techniques which include stretching, chanting, clapping and body movement. These help break down inhibitions and develop feelings of ‘childlike playfulness’. Breathing exercises are used to prepare the lungs for laughter, followed by a series of ‘laughter exercises’ that combine the method of acting and visualization techniques with playfulness. These exercises, when combined with the strong social dynamics of group behavior, lead to prolonged and hearty unconditional laughter. Laughter exercises are interspersed with breathing exercises. Twenty minutes of laughter is sufficient to develop full physiological benefits. With chair massage and acupressure added the benefits expand to a much greater level

A laughter yoga session may finish with “Laughter Meditation”. This is a session of unstructured laughter whereby participants sit or lie down and allow natural laughter to flow from within “like a fountain”.

The Artist’s Way and Joseph Campbell’s Concept  – “Live Your Bliss”

I have a friend who is a very passionate Jazz musician. She lives in New Orleans and e-mails me interesting articles.

She sent me one today I’m going to share with you. It is about being kind, bringing out the best in others and living your passion.

Joseph Campbell always talked about living “your bliss”.

He derived this idea from the Upanishads , a sacred Hindu text. Here the word Ananda is often mentioned. “Ananda” means bliss or rapture.  Campbell saw this not merely as a mantra, but as a helpful guide to the individual along the journey that each of us walks through life:

“If you follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living. Wherever you are—if you are following your bliss, you are enjoying that refreshment, that life within you, all the time.”

Campbell began sharing this idea with students during his lectures in the 1970s. By the time that The Power of Myth was aired on PBS in 1988, six months following Campbell’s death, “Follow your bliss” was a philosophy that resonated deeply with the American public—both religious and secular.

While I was speaking at a stress management event I sat down in a corporate onsite chair massage book in the exhibitor area. Run by www.eventschairmassage.com I took the break time to read the article Estelle had sent me. It was about a

simple fellow named  Sunny who died a few months back at 81 years of age. He had seen the world lived in India, came home to Brooklyn and took over his families old bar. He was an artist and clearly “Lived His Bliss!”

He was a pure artist and brought joy to people who were sad. When he passed on it created a ripple so great that it became a story in the New York Times.

Enjoy, Live your Bliss, be kind and help sad people to be happy.

Laughter Yoga and the Best Corporate Chair Massage in NYC

I learned about a new and easy approach to healing recently. This healing technique has been shown to have miraculous results for many people.

directory-1274229__340.jpg

I learned about Laughter Therapy a few weeks back at  a Holistic Wellness Conference with The New York City Chair Massage Company – www.eventschairmassage.com

According to the Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor “Therapeutic humor is defined to be: “Any intervention: that promotes health and wellness by stimulating a playful discovery, expression or appreciation of the absurdity or incongruity of life’s situations.”

Many people were unaware of the power of humor to heal until they saw the movie “Patch Adams”; the true story of a medical doctor committed to using conscious joy and humor to heal. In the healing community however, laughter has been known for years to have a curative effect on all types of physical and emotional illness including depression.  Back in the 1970’s Norman Cousins write a book “Anatomy of an Illness”, that described his healing from a degenerative illness while sitting in a hotel room and watching comedy movies for hours on end and laughing until his sides hurt.

people-314481__340.jpg

Laughter makes us less defensive about our insecurities, brings out our spontaneity and is associated with the pleasurable emotions.  Humor makes us feel lighthearted, joyous, childlike and playful. It is virtually impossible to experience anxiety, fear, depression, or anger while laughing.

Laughter reduces stress hormones, increases tolerance to pain, stimulates breathing, and increases immune response by increasing healthy antibodies. Psychotherapists have begun integrating humor in the treatment of emotional and mental disorders.

A study at the University of Maryland Medical Center showed the healing power of a great “laugh.”  The study of 300 individuals, half of them heart patients, concluded that laughter could have specific, measurable physical and emotional benefits.  Michael Miller, M.D. who led the research team says “We know the anger and stress impair the endothelium-the protective barrier lining our blood vessels. This can cause fat and cholesterol buildup in the coronary arteries. But laughter may have the opposite effect-it may stimulate elements that protect the endothelium.”  This important for weight loss and counting calories as well.

tape-403586__340.jpg

Humor has various cognitive effects. It can alter our perspective on life, reduce negative self-talk, change our mind set from an objective, serious, logical sense of reality to a more creative playful one. Laughter helps us to think in more flexible ways and  “draw outside the lines” and function “outside of the box.”

How do you use humor to get out of depression? Watch funny movies, read funny books, watch the comedy station on television and possibly even take a laughter yoga class.

One of the most positive aspects of capitalism is that it fosters creativity and innovative thinking.

The Best Corporate Chair Massage Company in NYC and Energetic Healing

Click here for the profound approaches to chair massage.

One cannot do Onsite Chair massage or seated chair massage without integrating energetic system. Virtually all energetic healing systems work with what Dr. Randolph Stone, the founder of Polarity Therapy calls, “The Wireless Anatomy.”  This is that part of us that exists prior to, through and around all the other anatomical systems.  It underlies and supports the nervous system, the circulatory system and can be addressed through touch, through visualization, color, homeopathic remedies, the pressing of specific points and even through inhaling aromatic oils or pressing on specific reflexes on the body.  It is the life force that exists in each of us.  Also known as Chi, Ki, Prana and Qi, it is the source of all healing.   Energetic healing does not require hands on contact.  It works totally on a vibrational or energetic level, as opposed to a structural level, and its purpose is to release the body’s own self-healing energy wherever it may be blocked.

Benefits of Energetic Healing:

  1. Greater sense of spiritual awareness
  2. Increased self-esteem
  3. Brings inspiration and motivation to consciousness
  4. Increased sensory awareness
  5. Reduced stress
  6. Reduced pain
  7. Increases healing of fractures, or broken bones and all injuries in which movement or manipulation of the joint is not recommended.

Note: One place where these “energetic” techniques are used is when a person is so sensitive to touch, that virtually any bodywork technique would create pain or discomfort.  It is also healing for those under great emotional stress.
